Unanswered: ORACLE 8i with XP :(

I have installed ORACLE 8i on Win XP on IBM ThinkPad. When it was installed all ORACLE services were working perfectly. But when I restarted the system the following service couldn't start :

    OracleOraHome81TNSListener

Please give some solution, I'll be thankfull to you.

Check if that 8i version is supported by your XP.
XP .... Home ? or Prof. ? Not sure if XP Home is supported.

XP Home is NOT supported, only Professional.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

what error messages are showing up when starting manually??

    from the cmd shell

    lsnrctl start

try setting trace level to admin and take a look at all the error messages and either analyze them by yourself or post them here

For what it's worth ... Here's a Post that we had earlier...

For the heck of it ... I've have a couple of clients that I found lately with problems with their service not starting ... I tracked it down to AUTO updates of Windows ... Patch 835732 was the culpret. Once they removed that patch, everything was ok... Check to see if you have this Microsoft patch loaded...

now TNSListener working but database isn't starting :'(

Somewhere on internet I found the solution like this:

'The problem is due to pentium 4 chip not Windows XP. Copy the contents of the 8i CD to HD, find and rename symcjit.dll to symcjit.old
Then start the installation by running setup.exe
    '

So I uninstalled and again installed ORACLE 8i as above.
Now TNSListener service is atleast running properly but now ORCL service is continuesly in 'STARTING' position.
Dear gbrabham I followed your solution but it also didn't work. You are right, may be its because of that patch but can you tell me how can I remove that patch.

    THANKS in advance
