Red face Unanswered: first but not least

    Hi all.
this is my first post here. I post from France, where i work as a freelance system administrator.

I actually have a real probleme that I have to solve.

I had an appointement for a new job today.
here is the describtion of what the custome wants me to do:

    environment:
OS: HP-UX, v11 and v11i. Using MC Service guard for cluster purpose.

    servers running Oracle 8i.

and the job is: Migrate to Oracle 9i !!!!

I have to say that I am not a dba. The only database I know, is MySql

BUT I realy want to learn as much as possible about Oracle db, because I forcast to become a dba once. So, you realize that this job is a real chance for me.
thatfor, I am looking for all online documentation I can find, even more it it can directly help me for that migration, 8i to 9i, running on a HP-UX server (cluster).

I will be very thankfull if someone could give me links or urls or even mails, with online documentation.

Who knows, maybe someday I will be able to answer a question here.. I hope so.

Thank you very much in advance.

    Best regards

    Sharvin

You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
The average person thinks he's above average!
For most folks, they don't know, what they don't know.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

Shsadat; The MOST important doc is the install guide.
The setps required are usually: (this assumes going to different server)
    1. Export existing database and copy to new server
    2. Install Oracle on New server
    3. Install patches to bring Oracle up to latest release level
    4. create oracle directory structures for oradata files
    5. Run gencrdb on old server to generate database create script.
    6. copy init files & db create script to new server
    7. Edit scripts to reflect new directory structures, etc
    8. Use P-file to create an instance
    9. Use database create script to create the database.
    10. Import data for step #1.
    11. shutdown database
12 start database with mount option
13 place database in archive log mode
14 shutdown database (you my use alter database open in place of 14-15
    15 startup database with p-file
    16 create spfile

I hope this gets you started. I left out a few steps that can be performed almost anytime, like creating the oracle password file, but this should give you a general roadmap
