    Can I choose where I want to store my database using MSDE

    Yes. Look up CREATE DATABASE in the Books Online. You have to give a path for each file. I think most folks do not do it with MSDE, because they can not be certain if a specific path exists.

    sp_detach+move+sp_attach...That's in short, but pretty much what you'll have to do if the database already exists. If not, - supply CREATE DATABASE with FILENAME parameter that will identify the physical file names for both data and log devices.
