i tried searching the site but didn't find that one - looks like the answer is in there. thanks a lot

this might save me some pain - right now if A re-opens an XLS which is already open (by A or by Excel), A quits when i try to write to the XLS and leaves a hidden Excel instance behind. the only way i found to drop the hidden instance once A quits is a reboot.

so far i'm playing with error-traps to kill the hidden instance before A quits, but maybe it is smarter to check if the file is open before i start messing with it.

Not sure about how to fix the hidden instance--I've seen other VB applications do this too. But depending on what OS you're using, a way around having to reboot is to open Windows Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and look for Excel.EXE. Click on it and click the End Process button.
