Red face Unanswered: Confusion in Basic Concepts:Server vs Instance!

    Hi all,
I run Oracle 9iR2 on Windows 2000 so I have seen some Background processes named by OracleOraHome92ORCL and .... in ControlPanel/Services and One ORACLE.EXE in the processes list from taskmanager,OK?
So my first ask is to verify EXACTLY where are Background processes of Oracle(DBW,LGW,...) and also where is the SERVER process(dedicated or shered)?
My second question is: When I try to connect database via SQL*Plus and the instance is not started up yet so the SERVER process(?) how authenticate my username and password?
I really mixed up with the concept of BCKG processes of instance AND SERVER process!!
    -thanks in advance

You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
The average person thinks he's above average!
For most folks, they don't know, what they don't know.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.
