    Unanswered: fatal: pre-existing shared memory block

    Anybody hear about this error message from serverlog?

    2004-12-31 15:59:43 [1405] FATAL: pre-existing shared memory block (key 5432001, ID 6914048) is still in use

    This is assuming you're using Linux or something like it.
    It sounds like your Postgres server died/was killed badly and left some shared memory lying around. Easiest thing to do to clear that up is to reboot the computer. Otherwise, you can manually (read: annoying) free up that block of shared memory using shell commands. I don't remember what the commands are off-hand...
