Unanswered: SQL Server Performance Stress Test

I have been asked to perform a performance stress test on a SQL server with new hardware that we are going to be receiving.

How have some of you performed your stress analysis against new or existing hardware?

This hardware that I am going to receive will have to be configured within a high availabilty environment. I want to take this opportunity to really put a beat down on this server.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Get the "Database Hammer" from the SQL Server 2000 resource kit

the hammer will let you simulate the combined load of hundreds of simultaneous users and the insert of 10 million rows.

you can read the full resource kit online at the msdn library however you will have to search for the db hammer or purchase a copy of the resource kit just to get the cd

You need to choose the type of test you want to perform based on the type of activity you prod server is expected to endure the most. Read or Write? Or both? Write T-SQL batch scripts againt PUBS database and see what you have (you can easily emmulate multiple connections by enclosing the script into WHILE 1=1 BEGIN...........WAITFOR DELAY '00:00:01' END construct and fireing it from multiple QA windows).
