    Unanswered: referential integrity issue

i just have a question, i have a program that inserts data on my
    oracle 8i, database....

however let us say that i want to insert data on a table and it
means that i have to insert a data to a field that is a foreign key....

from my understanding since it is a foreign key, data in it must
already exist in another table, how can i somehow check if the
data that i will insert in the Foreign key field already exist in another
this is for referential integrity issue

    thanks in advance...

You could use a SELECT statement to see if the FK Value exists. Or you could just insert the row, and see if you get an exception (FK violation).
