I am not aware of any technique of running a query to check if paths exist, nor replacing drive letters

Drive letters can vary depending on the log in script the user id & profile.
Unlless you are able to map a drive letter to a physical drive and hold that mapping then you will have to do it for each PC on the network

The only acceptable path definition is the URL
    \\servername\path\to\the\file.ext

you can check the file exists, forget the function but it can be done by inserting a test in the forms 'oncurrent' event.

    i agree

probably you will have to build a recordset and then loop thru each record and use Dir(myrecordset!UNCformatFullpathNameExt)

although having said that, i guess
UNCexists: iif(Dir(UNCfullName) = "", "NO SUCH FILE", "OK")
will sit in a query ??

I know you can use the command FileExists to find out if a particular file exists. However, I am not sure how to make this command part of query. Can you tell more as far as what you are trying to accomplish here?
