    Unanswered: 8i and 9i homes on same machine

    Hi,

    I have a problem running a 8.1.5 database on 9.2 Listener.
    I have two Oracle homes installed in the same machine. 9.2.0.1.0 and 8.1.5 and I want both homes be accessible through the TNSListener. So I have 9.2 Listener and 9.2 database is opening ok. But there's no way I can connect to 8.1.5 database. I get this error when trying to connect:
    ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process

    Is it possible at all to work with such conf?
    Or is it possible to run two listeners (8 and 9) at the same time? Looks like not, cause only one would start..

    just in case, content of my listener.ora and tnsnames.ora:

    listener.ora:

    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = jot02stest3)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
    )
    )

    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
    (ORACLE_HOME = E:\Ora92)
    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    )
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ALPHA)
    (ORACLE_HOME = E:\Oracle\Ora81)
    (SID_NAME = ALPHA)
    )
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = ANDREI)
    (ORACLE_HOME = E:\Ora92)
    (SID_NAME = ANDREI)
    )
    )

    tnsnames.ora
    ANDREI =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = jot02stest3)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ANDREI)
    )
    )

    ALPHA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = jot02stest3)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ALPHA)
    )
    )

    so ALPHA is the problematic database.
    Any help or thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

    hi

    i think you have to make a new listener (listening on an other port)
    for the oracle8 environment

    so you connect with the oracle9 listener to oracle9 databases
    and connect with oracle8 listener to the oracle8 databases

    and in the tnsnames.ora you have only to change the port for
    the oracle8 listener for oracle8 database

    hey, thanks for your help!
    but actually it is possible to serve both databases with one (earliest) listener! my problem was that I had an environment variable of ORACLE_HOME set! and it's not allowed when having more than one oracle homes in the system. cause then you end up trying to connect to 8i database using 9i home and of course it fails!
