    Unanswered: Installation Doubt : Please help!

    Hi

    I need to install the binary distribution of PostgreSQL 7.4.6 in Red Hat 9.0. I downloaded the following files from this page http://www.postgresql.org/ftp/binary...dhat/redhat-9/ and installed them.

    1. postgresql-7.4.6-2PGDG.i686.rpm
    2. postgresql-jdbc-7.4.6-2PGDG.i686.rpm (for connecting from java via JDBC)
    3. postgresql-server-7.4.6-2PGDG.i686.rpm

    But I'm not able to start the server using the postmaster command.

    $ postmaster -iD ./pgsql/data/
    FATAL: "./pgsql/data/" is not a valid data directory
    DETAIL: File "./pgsql/data//PG_VERSION" is missing.

    Do I need to install all the files from http://www.postgresql.org/ftp/binary...dhat/redhat-9/ ? What are all the rpm files that need to be mandatorily installed for a basic version of PostgreSQL ? Any help / links ?

    thanks,
    saravanan

    You need to initialize the data directory:

    initdb -D ./pgsql/data/

    Then you can start postmaster.

    Hope this helps.
