Question Unanswered: backend and frontend! What are they?

I've noticed a lot of queries about Backend and FrontEnd Databases and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what this entails and how to do it.

I've got a number of current databases running that may benefit from a lock down effect but I don't want to password the entire database.

Also if all the data is stored on the backend database, would it be possible to view the data in the frontend and modify this data?

Sorry if this sounds a stupid question but the IT guys where I work would charge to do something like this and if its easy then I may as well.

The IT guys would charge because it's not simple proposal

Backend/frontend applications are split into two parts: One part to store data in, and the other part to view/manipulate the data.

Implementing user-level security is a whole different issue entirely. There are quite a few ways to do it, none of them are as straight-forward as you may like.
oh yeah... documentation... I have heard of that.
