SQLMail sucks. So, there's a lot of people who've had problems with it. There's also a lot of solutions for it that work or don't work to varying levels.

    1. Use another solution like SMTP mail. You can find a lot of solutions here:

    http://www.sqlteam.com/filtertopics.asp?topicID=125

    2. Write a service to stop/start it periodically.
--If SQLMail ever loses the connection to the MAPI enabled service, it won't "auto recover". You have to start/stop it to regain connectivity.

    3. Stop/restart the SQL Agent.
--Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. Try just stopping and starting mail first with xp_stopmail and xp_startmail.

There are also a couple hotfixes for SQLMail hanging the agent. Look at KB articles 839405 and 329375.

    Another option ...

If you got access to a SMTP server configured to relay mail from your SQL Server you could use this.

I've used it myself a lot and I'm quite pleased with the results.
The most likely way for the world to be destroyed, most experts agree, is by accident. That's where we come in; we're computer professionals. We cause accidents.
