    Unanswered: DIFFERENCE function in Oracle ?

    Hi,

    In DB2, there is a function named DIFFERENCE which will return a value from 0 to 4 representing the difference between the sounds of two strings based on applying the SOUNDEX function to the strings. A value of 4 is the best possible sound match.

    Is there any equivalent for the above function(DIFFERENCE) in ORACLE ?

    Please advice.

    Thanks,
    Sam

    Oracle has a SOUNDEX function which allows you to search on a text column that "sounds" like some word, like in this example from the doc :
    Code:
    SELECT last_name, first_name
    FROM hr.employees
    WHERE SOUNDEX(last_name) = SOUNDEX('SMYTHE');

    LAST_NAME  FIRST_NAME
    ----------    ----------
    Smith           Lindsey
    Smith           William
    ... but I've not seen any function like the DIFFERENCE one you describe above. You can look at the doc here part 7 "Functions".

    HTH & Regards,
