Recovering a user database is pretty straightforward - recreate the database and load a database dump, followed by any transaction dumps that you may have (if transaction dumps are enabled).

For the master database it's a little trickier, and you need to start the db server in single user mode before the master database can be reloaded.

A full explanation of the recovery procedures is available in the Sybase SysAdmin guide, http://sybooks.sybase.com/onlinebook...s/asg1251e/sag in chapters 28 and 29.

If the database is in suspect mode and you don't have a backup you need to have a lot of luck. You can usually only recover if the error that caused the recovery to fail can be corrected easily (such as a problem with opening a file that can be corrected.)

Once the error that caused the recovery failure has been corrected you can update the status of the database (sysdatabases.status) and remove the "suspect" flag, and then restart your database server.

The exact procedure for this is documented in various places, for example in the Sybase FAQ at http://www.uni-giessen.de/faq/archiv.../msg00006.html
