Unanswered: Unable to start Sybase 12.5.2 live server

I'm unable to start Sybase 12.5.2 (running on sparc SUNW,Ultra-80) live server, but the but the backup server is running, I tried this:

    Code:
    bash-2.05# /opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/bin/dataserver -e/opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/install/PPLE_SYB

    00:00000:00000:2006/02/01 19:05:26.65 kernel Checked out license ASE_DEV
00:00000:00000:2006/02/01 19:05:26.65 kernel Adaptive Server Enterprise Developer Edition.
00:00000:00000:2006/02/01 19:05:26.65 kernel Attempt to open device d_master failed.
00:00000:00000:2006/02/01 19:05:26.65 kernel dopen: open 'd_master', No such file or directory

Somehow though the backup server is up and running :

    Code:
    bash-2.05# /opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/install/showserver
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
        root 5646 1 0 Oct 19 ? 0:00 sh -c /opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/bin/backupserver -e/opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/install/PPLE
        root 5647 5646 0 Oct 19 ? 0:00 /opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/bin/backupserver -e/opt/sybase/ASE-12_5/install/PPLE_SYB_B

Here are the last 200 lines of the log file
    Code:
    bash-2.05# tail -200 /opt/sybase/log.txt

Track down any problems with your master device:

"Attempt to open device d_master failed."

The backupserver is a standalone binary that doesn't require any devices, that's why it's running without the dataserver. Check the RUN_* file for your dataserver and track back to the master device from there and check for issues.

    Hope That Helps,
