I asked about the same thing, and some of the responses that I got was that this would require ASE 15 (direct IO support) to work properly.

I've been considering making some tests (with 12.5.3), but I need to get some resources (time, disks) together to do so.

    Great,
    many thanks Michael,

I thinks, I will have more informations soon,
    I will let you know.

On Sybase internal there is no whites papers or technical documents for this option.
But engineering will help me I think.

Direct IO is only available in > ASE 15.0 or later.
ASE 12.5.3 is not certified with CIO who is very similar to Direct IO

Since we support both Direct IO - admittingly with 15.0 - and Quick IO, support of Concurrent IO is somewhat redundant.
on 12.5 has two choices in improving performance of file system
    devices: raw and Quick IO.
For 15.0 customers there's a third choice: Direct IO.
