Red face Unanswered: how to install postgreSQl ?

    hi:

I have downloaded postgreSQL but I'm having a hard time trying to install the software.

The version that I donwloaded is: postgresql-8.1.3-1
In that folder I have one file which is the executable one to install the applicaion : postgresql-8.1.msi
I start the wizard: On the third window it tells me where do I want to install it, I selected: C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.1\
Fourth window its about the service configuration.
Do I want to install it as a service or not ?
If I do have to install it as a service, what service name, account name, and account domain should I use ????

On the next window it tells me something about initiliazing a database cluster:

I have no clue what to select there.......????????

    Pls HELP !!!!

    Thank you !!

Yes, you would want to install it as a service, normally.
I would use the defaults whenever I could, and use the machine name as the service name, unless there was a good reason not to do so.

Also, ref the Windows Installer FAQ.

hey ! ... I got it to work
I created a new partition on my PC with NTFS and it let me install it with no problem. Awesome !!!

I have another question. If I go to Start --> All programs --> There is a folder named: PostgreSQL 8.1. Under this folder there are 3 programs:

    1. Command Prompt
    2. pgAdmin III
    3. psql to 'postgres'

Which of this am I supposed to use to create a database in PostgreSQL ?

    Thanks

    PGAdmin III is the GUI.

PSQL and the command prompt are also used for Postgres but are command line instead of GUI. Try some of the examples that are out there that describe the command line syntax (from the help files) and the differences will become clear...
