Question Unanswered: Moving sybase device from one disk to another

    Hi all

I have ans ASE 12.5.0.3 server on a sun box
the data devices currently live on a san
I need to move the devices to another san
as the current san is being decommissioned

I've thought about this and would like some advise
    I could :
    1. mirror the devices to the other san then drop the primary mirror
    and problem solved OR
    2. backup current databases build new devices with new databases and restore

which would be the better option ?? keeping in mind that this is a critical server

    Thanks

Option 1 is the safest and simplest in my opinion. I used this method a couple of times, and it works great.
Be sure to check if it works the right way before you drop the primary mirror though.

In the interest of completeness I'll also say that you can do a physical copy of the device (with the db server shut down), restart the server with the 3608 trace flag and update sysdevices to point to the new device, shut down with nowait, and then remove the 3608 flag and restart.

However, disk mirror is probably the cleanest and safest way to do this.

    One more way

    Hi guys

    There is one more way
the sybase devices are on files systems not raw
so I can move the files th other san
umount the current devices and remount the new san
    at the same points

Sybase comes with a DISK reinit and DISK REFIT commands that can move device files across.

Starting 12.5.1 onwards, you could simply use the unmount/mount which run the same under the covers.
