Unanswered: INSTR and SUBSTR on LONG column

    When attempting
    Code:
    SELECT
      SUBSTR(MESSAGE, 18, 10)
    FROM
      MY_TABLE
    MY_TABLE is defined as:
    Code:
    STATUS CHAR(1) NULL DEFAULT ('N')
    MESSAGE LONG NULL
    I get the following error:
    Code:
    ORA-00932: Inconsistent Data types.
I've looked at dbms_lob and dbms_sql packages, but I don't think those will help. Is there a package or cast/convert that I can do to be able to test/parse the values in a LONG column.

And no, I am not happy with doing this. It's a structure handed to me (copied from a SQL database server) by people more familiar with Java than with databases.

Okay, I should have searched the Oracle forums as well as here before posting. The answer is found at:

In my case, I don't think it will help, but it's an interesting read.
