    Unanswered: unable to detach database.

I need some insight if possible. I installed a new server (to replace an aging machine) with SQL 2000. After installing SQL on the new server I tried to detach a database from the old server so that I can attach it to the new instance of SQL. My problem is that when I do the process I am stopped with an error message.

“Error 8146: procedure sp_detach_db has no parameters and arguments supplied.”

This is happening with all of the user databases on the old server.

I have tried to run this using both the Query Analyzer and from the right-click menu option and both return the same error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Try to backup your databases, copy the .BAK files on the new server, and restore them.

    a little deeper.

Since I am trying to get the database over to a new SQL instance how is the back up restored? I ask this because I already did a backup successfully however, after I moved the backup file to the new server when I did the restore on the new server only a drop down box of installed databases are the only option for a restore. Here is my question how do I point to the backup file (target database) to restore it on the new instance of SQL.

    thank you,
    Keith

    hold up.

as for detach and reattach, let's see the code being used.

as for backing up and restoring to another server, see this...

“If one brings so much courage to this world the world has to kill them or break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.
