well, I was able to remove the characters in front by using =trim(A1). Does anyone know how to remove the back white space after the characters?

Trim should do it. Try this. If the names are in column A, starting at A2, then put the following formulas in appropriate cells:

    B2:

    =TRIM(A2)

    C2:

    =LEN(A2)

    D2:

    =LEN(B2)

That should give you a clue whether the spaces are being removed.
    old, slow, and confused
    but at least I'm inconsistent!
