    Unanswered: Assigning sequential number automatically

I am working on a database that tracks a huge inventory that will move within the next few months. Each item in the inventory has been manually assigned a sequential tag number. The number is a multi-part alphanumeric number, ie., B21-23-CS-0025, where 0025 is the uniquie sequential part of the number. What I am trying to do is set up a routine to automatically generate this number by extracting information from the database to create the first three sections of the number, ie. B21 = Building 21, 23 = Room 23, CS = Storage Cabinet and 0025 would be generated automatically after checking the highest existing four digit group and then generating the next higher number, ie. 0026. Does anyone have any ideas or a link to some sample code that might give me a foot up on accomplishing this task?

    Thanks for any help
