    Unanswered: Need some Advice

    hey all,

been awhile since I've posted but I need some advice on a new problem thats been brought to my attention.

We're running MS Access 2003, and what I'm faced with is the following problem.

We have our service techs always out on the road with laptops, and when they're there they create Service Reports and they have our customers sign off on a signature capture device. Now what this does is it gives us a hard copy of the report on their computer with the signature of our customer to show they've signed off on the work we have done. Thats fine and dandy when they're out on the road cause it stores the signature on their laptop locally(C:\My Documents\Signature.bmp).

This is where our problem comes in.

When they come back to our main office and update the server here locally with the new report for our sales and other departments to review they cannot. The reason being is, because they do not currently have signatures tied into their computers locally.

I'm wondering is there a better way of doing this like maybe moving the pictures from the laptop locally to one of our servers? or am I S.O.L on this issue.

If ya need more info let me know and if ya can help thanks in advance!!

Hm, I'm needing to do something similar

What are you using for data capture devices?

What I am doing at the moment is creating a receipt for the customer to sign off on based on the form built in the database. The field engineer would get the customer to sign the receipt (using a ticket printer), and then send that copy in to the office to add to the file. He also clicks "submit," and the report is emailed to the dispatcher in snp format.

As to how to solve your problem, if you created a record of the source in the database, you could create a routine/query/module approach to:
    1. copy the data into your tables
    2. query the new data for the file locations on the laptop
    3. for each instance found, copy it to the new location
    4. update the location in your master database.

Similarly, I have a question about how you are copying the data over. Is it using a synchronization using replicaiton ID's, and if so, how are you dealing with things like work orders? Autonumber is a problem because you have multiple units in the field.

what we're using is a portable signature capture device made by Topaz Systems. It's a little hand held device with a capture screen and a stylist pen.

It takes the data from the signature and places it in a table to give ya an idea of how the image is transfered into the table it looks like this
    Code:
    Customer Signature
    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
Thats the entire signature from our customer. Now when it's shown in the form it's an ActiveX Control.

And the way we're updating the records is by doing an update query from the local copy on our service tech's laptop to our server version of the same database. No synchronization is being used here..as we can't have that happen incase of changes here in the office before they return.

    Hope this helps a little..

I don't know how useful this will be, but can't you write a macro or like a perl script to handle this?

if I knew perl and macros better I probably would...but I'm just trying to figure out a better way of making so when they view the report the pictures get created from the data that's in the tables

ok, I thought you needed a better process to get the pictures from the laptop to the server...
