Hi, I'm a newbie here and it's nice to know that there's help out there! So thanks to anyone who offers support.

As far as my problem is concerned, I am (or was) operating on WinXP SP2. I just installed SP2 this morning and that is when the problem began. The installation was interrupted and I was told to remove SP2 from the HD. When I closed the window telling me to remove SP2, the installation completed anyway. So I thought I was good. I went on to download IE 7.0 which I have alreay installed on 2 other systems. After installation was complete, I restarted the computer. When my computer started up again, taking much longer than usual, I could see my wallpaper but no icons. I got a window saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience"...blah, blah, blah.

The error details read:
AppName: explorer.exe Appver: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1869 Offset: 0000cf31

I have attempted the following with hope to restore the system:

I have tried restarting several times. I get the same error

I have attempted to start in SAFE MODE. I get the same error

If anyone can offer advice I would be very grateful!!!
