SQL Server 2000 can't be installed on Windows XP. I can't run it on my XP box, had to use Windows Server 2003 instead. Windows Server 2000 and Windows NT will work. If all you want is a DB server to play with, try a demo version of SQL Server 2005, which will run on Windows XP.

SQL Server 2000 Developer edition can be installed on a WinXp machine. However if you are looking to install the Enterprise edition, that is not possible.
