Unanswered: help with conditional row sum based on string value

I have an Excel data file with columns similar to the following, where column A is text:

    A B C D E F
    visitor 4 3 1 2
    member 2 4 1 6

I want to add up certain cells for the row of data based on the value in column A.
For example, if A="visitor" I want to sum columns B, E and F.
What would be the best way to accomplish this?

"Best" way is hard to know. Neglecting the basic formula method, such as =B2+B7+B8+B15 (or whatever). Some ways - pivot table, SUMIF formula, auto subtotals (after sorting on column A), parameterised query table. Without know too much about your situation, a pivot table is likely to be very suitable.
