Unanswered: Newbie - Do I need a join?

I'm a very new user of Crystal and have run into a problem. My table is MS Access, 850 lines w/several descriptive fields. I want to create a formula where I can get the avg of a group of lines who meet two conditions. Here is what I was using:

    If {oryx_rates.question_no}=1 and {oryx_rates.question_type}='ami'
    then average ({oryx_rates.rate})

I get a number, however instead of the average being just of my lines for question #1 and question type 'ami', it's the average of all 850 lines. I need some type of join to link the two statements but am unsure of what? My next thought was to write a sql expression however I'm not able to use the words 'select' or 'from' without receiving a syntax error! Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

In the condition u r not mentioning any codition for the average. you have to use a formula field for calculating the average according the required condition.

Yes, that's what I was thinking the problem was too but I'm not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions?
