Unanswered: Sorting in ways other than Alphabetical/Numerical

    Hi,

I'm trying to sort a report based on a "rank" field. It automatically sorts it alphabetically. Does anybody know how I can tell it what ranks are higher than others and have it sort that way?

It's a text field. In the form, I have a value list set up for them to select the ranks.

Let's see ... [dramatic pause] ... Add a numeric order to your rank(s) and order off of that?
Back to Access ... ADO is not the way to go for speed ...

Is there a way to add a numeric order and have that not show when I run the reports? I have tried the 1 General, 2 Colonel, etc. and it works to order them but I can't have the numbers show up...

anejoh: sure just base the report off a query and use this:

    IIf([rank]= 1,"Admiral",[rank])

    i think thats right...

heres another thing iwas looking into, what if i am rating on the PH scale, where 7 is the top number and the others fall farther down than that? how would i sort it then?

If your text rankings are the following for example:

    poor
    good
    best

you can create a reference table called Rankings looking like this:

    TextRanking NumericRanking
    poor 1
    good 2
    best 3

and you can join the 2 tables and order by the NumericRanking field.
