it seems if I start the db thru em it runs , but then if I connect to the db thru sqlplus , then I get this error. Also if I start the db thru em and try to access thru sqlplus I get a shared memory error.... any ideas?

    Thanks

Are you sure the environment where you run EM and SQLPLUS share the same ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME ?
