    This error means that you are creating a synonym which is based on a table/view which doesn't exist. So - make sure it refers existing table or view.

    Could you post CREATE SYNONYM statement, as well as SELECT COUNT(*) FROM original_table_or_view so that we could make sure what is happening there. Please, copy the entire SQL*Plus session and post it here.

    SQL> sho user
    USER is "SYSADM"
    SQL> select count(*) from tab1
    2 ;

    COUNT(*)
    ----------
    5202575

    SQL> grant all on tab1 to schema1;

    Grant succeeded.
    SQL>

    ---------------

    SQL> sho user
    USER is "schema1"
    09:39:05 SQL> create synonym tab1 for sysadm.tab1;
    create synonym tab1 for sysadm.tab1
    *
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00955: name is already used by an existing object

    Infact when I look up for the synonyms in schema1, I can see it TAB1 and the table_owner is SYSADM.
    It says name is already exisiting, so I tried to give a count on it and see but then I get the following:

    Elapsed: 00:00:00.14
    09:39:19 SQL> select count(*) from tab1;
    select count(*) from tab1
    *
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00942: table or view does not exist

    Elapsed: 00:00:00.15
    09:39:24 SQL> desc tab1;
    ERROR:
    ORA-04043: object "SYSADM"."tab1" does not exist

    select owner, object_name, object_type, status
    from dba_objects
    where object_name = 'tab1';
