Unanswered: Need help reducing database backup times

    Hi all,

Currently we take full database backups nightly for our SQL Server 2000 data warehouse systems. The backups take a very long time over 20 hours and we would like to find a good way to reduce these backup times. How can I change our backup plan to reduce the long backup run times. Data size is 1 TB for our data warehouse database server.

    Thanks

...not sure the type of data you are storing but if it is compressable you might want to look at a product such as SQL Litespeed. If you are using stock maintenance plans it would appear from my experience that if you have it verify the backup it will will take quite some time. not sure I would want to risk relying on a backup that wasn't verified though...

    differential backups?

are you going directly to tape or to disk and then to tape?

    filegroup backups?

But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.

    Tuning backups

    Hi,

Well I proposed SQL Litespeed but this costs money and we have no budget for tools right now. If I changed backups to do a weekly full backup and daily differential/incremental would this save time on backups?

    Thanks
