    Question Enough of ORA-12640:Authentication adapter initialization failed. Please help.

    Hello to all,
    First I want to start with my faulting server description:

    (Lets name this machine as Machine91)
    Oracle 10g release 10.2.0.2.0
    MS Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 and IIS 6.0

    I've a web application (ASP.NET application) gives the following error when ever I try to login (that checks my password and username etc. from an oracle database).
    "ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed."

    Ok, I have a solution for this problem which is:
    The original entry in sqlnet.ora file :
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    Changing this one to:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NONE).

    But I simply don't want to use it. Because. This web project works without problem if I place and configure it on my local machine which is a Windows XP professional with IIS 5.1. The same web application successfully connects to the oracle database (that database server is the same server that I mentioned above *Machine91 ) and logins to the program...

    What is the difference ? why Machine91's IIS can not connect to the Oracle DB on it self and give "ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed." error ?

    Any ideas ?

    Thank you very much.

    Note: If more information is needed for you to answer I can give additional information. Please just ask.

    Cool

    The most common cause of permission problems when you are trying to run ASP pages is the fact that the IIS users do not have read & execute access on the %ORACLE_HOME% directory and subdirectories (%ORACLE_HOME%\bin in particular).

    You may need to do a SQL*Net trace to identify the source of your error. To enable SQL*Net tracing, in the sqlnet.ora file add the following lines:

    trace_level_client=16
    trace_file_client=cli
    trace_directory_client=d:\temp
    trace_unique_client=true
    trace_timestamp_client=ON

    Cool Sounds good

    Ok I've done the thing as you say.
    Now how am I supposed to diagnose this error using the trace file I got from the error. I mean It seems quite long, is there some software that does this for me, or should I look some specific sentence like
    .
    .
    .
    (7416) [27-ŞUB-2007 18:35:02:284] Attempted load of system pfile source D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    (7416) [27-ŞUB-2007 18:35:02:284] Parameter source loaded successfully
    (7416) [27-ŞUB-2007 18:35:02:284]
    (7416) [27-ŞUB-2007 18:35:02:284] Attempted load of local pfile source c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\sqlnet.ora
    (7416) [27-ŞUB-2007 18:35:02:284] Parameter source was not loaded
    .
    .
    .
    The original file is very long (69 KB) this is just a sample..

    Can you please give more detailed information about diagnosing the error.

    Talking

    If there is an error, it should be recorded in the trace file -- Unfortunately, ORA-12640 is a somewhat generic error. If you are using the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle, try instead using the Oracle ODBC Driver which may lead to a more informative error.

    Have you checked/granted read & execute permissions on %ORACLE_HOME% and all sub-folders?

    Also check out the logs under %ORACLE_HOME%\network\log.

    Good luck!

    PS: There is no software I know of that will diagnose this error.

    Red face I hope moderators wont kill me for that :P

    Going still crazy about this error.
    I've already changed the permissions of oracle home directory and all it's subdirectories including BIN. I also checked the files one by one
    The ASP.NET Machine Account has rights to read open execute whatever privileges to access to the oracle directory. I compare my two machines ( My Local Machine and Server Machine) and they have the same asp.net account privileges to all sub directories of oracle home.
    And we're already using Oracle ODBC driver...

    Configuration #1:

    My Local machine running IIS 5.1( and my web application) and has oracle 10.1.0 installed (but not running an instance)
    Server Running Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 installed (and running the instance needed by my application)

    Authentication succeeds and web application works

    Configuration #2:

    Server Running IIS 6.0 (and my web application) and has oracle 10.2.0.2.0 installed (and running instance needed by my application)

    Authentication service fails to start or initialize what ever and my application does not work ?!

    ok now, please forgive me for this one. This is not a "play on my home" project. So that i should do this
    Would anyone please check this trace log file that my error created.
    There are some specific points that "ERROR" and "Oracle error" words occur. Might be helpful while skimming.

    Now that I solved my problem. Here is a solution for this problem for those interested:
    Setting up ODAC 1.0.1.0.4.0 to the Oracle server machine solved the problem.
    Because my project has been developed using this version of oracle data access libraries. So publishing the project to another machine that does not have same version of oracle data access client Fails The Authentication adapter...

    If you receive this kind of error, Check that:
    1-ASPNET user has the rights to execute and read all %ORACLE_HOME%bin directory.
    2-You are better be using Oracle data access drivers instead of Microsoft ODBC drivers.
    3-ASP.NET application server and Oracle Database server has the same versions of Oracle.Data.Access clients libraries whatever installed.

    Note: don't forget that the most important is number 3.
