the lower SKUs should work on XP, like standard and express, probably also developer edition.

I think enterprise requires windows server 2k3 though.

I have 2005 developer running on XP Media Center edition at home. I did not think it would be supported, but it worked out. I always thought home edition was not supported.
“If one brings so much courage to this world the world has to kill them or break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.

as long as it's windows XP binary, it should work. However, you may not have things like report server etc. Server applications required server framework to work well.
