Sorry jez ... he said a data ... thereby implying the singular ... although I can see where the mixed usage of the modifier with the noun can be misconstrued. newbie should have said "a datum" or "some data".

I certainly agree that bcp is a fine solution for "some data"!

you can use bcp to insert a single row, might be overkill though.

a firehose to quench a candle.

users insert data. i make it possible. unless they screw up and then i fix their data. but if the system allows screwed up data, maybe i messed up. or maybe it was the developer before me. sometimes i move data into new systems or between systems but that is nasty business i try to stay away from. i should do something a little more meaningful with my life.
“If one brings so much courage to this world the world has to kill them or break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Earnest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms.

    1. Package the data in an envelope
    2. Carefully open the table with the table keys
    3. gently slide yourself into the table..you might need to use a transporter, or however Tron got into the machine
    4. open the envelope and shake the contents out
    5. fight your way out of the machine
    6. Inform the users of your quest

The physical order of data in a database has no meaning.
