    Where to start really?

    Good Code,
    Memory
    Logs and datafiles on seperate physical drives
    Plenty of IO (suggesting 15k rpm disks instead of 10k etc.)
    Good Code
    Good Code
    Best practices that are followed by your developers
    Network load balancing
