Unanswered: How to check SID of a database

I need to check out the SID of my oracle database to make an entry into TNSNAMES.ora. When I do select $v_instancename I get some value. But when I set it in tnsnames.ora file and try to connect through toad, it throws "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified"
    error.

Could u help me out with this?

    Thanks.

    Regards,
    Sajita...

check whether u have modified proper tnsnames.ora file .....cos sometimes it happens that the tnsnames.ora file is being taken from some other location (i.e E:\oracle\ora92\network\ADMIN\SAMPLE) i.e people do modify incorrect tnsnames.ora....

Yeah... I've modified the correct file. Its path is mentioned in the environment variables also.
