    Unanswered: Foxpro Migration

    Hello,

I'm looking to migrate a visual foxpro database to SQL server. Before I map and migrate over to the new system I need to get an understanding of the structure of the old one and cleans the data. Unfortunatley I don't have any of the orginal design documention. Is there a way I can import the visual foxpro data files into Enterprise manager? Or what method would you recommend to first get an understanding of how the database works?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Andy

You should start by profiling the data and building a metadata repository. I have some fox code to do this on my blog at blog.todmeansfox.com that will give you a head start in this effort (click the profiling link).

To get the exact schema into SQL server, use the FoxPro Upsizing Wizard, which will automatically create the DDL for you. Check http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Wiki~UpsizingWizard~VFP for more info.

Also, using SSIS is an option and works well as a pipe to move data into SQL Server.
