Unanswered: Query to submit and check for the existence of a field in an Access database.

I have a populated database. I would like to submit a contract number then check the data base to see whether that contract number exists in the database. If it does return a count of the number of occurrences, if it doesn't , then add the contract number and some additional fields. How is this done? I'm using MS Access 2003.
    Thank you...

Should the contract number be unique? Should there ever be more than one contract number?

Yes is the answer to both questions.

Add an index to the contract number field. Table design, select the field and then select "Yes (No duplicates)"
