Unanswered: Top 3 X rows for each Y row

How do I build an Access 2000 query to select the TOP 3 rows from table X for each row in table Y ?

Here are the specifics - I am building a project status database. There is a Project table containing columns - project_id, name, contact. There is a Status table containing columns - project_id, sdate, stext and saction_item. I want to build a query that will return the three most recent statuses for each project. I believe I am going to use TOP, but I'm really struggling with syntax.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

    Thanks -
    Jennifer
