    Unanswered: Oracle Questions

I am using Access 2000 for my DB.

How much work to switch to Oracle 10g XE??(free version).

I will have the DB on a server, the clients will be local.

    less than 2000 records.

would there be much administration once it is setup?

Access .MDB is a setup & forget, Would Oracle be the same??

For less than 2000 records, you might even use MS Excel. Access is WOW!, and Oracle is overkill.

XE will be installed without problems. You'll need to transfer data from Access to Oracle (do you know SQL*Loader, for example?). Having data in a table is not enough because you'll need to create front-end for your user(s). XE offers Application Builder which will help you create simple forms/reports, but - is that enough? If not, you'll need to learn something more about (PL/)SQL programming in Oracle.

If you, finally, choose to use Oracle XE, I believe you won't regret. It contains almost all functionalities as a "real, grown-up" Oracle database.

what do you mean by Access is WOW!

I want to use VB 6 for the UI for all users. All I want Oracle for is the database to store data.

Access is "WOW" if compared to Excel; 2000 records is really a miserable number of records (of course, I'm not saying that this information is not important - only the amount is puny).
