    What does (+) indicate at the end of code?

    it indicates which table is the one that doesn't have to have a match in an outer join

    don't use it, use OUTER JOIN syntax exclusively

    It is Oracle specific.

    he must've got it mixed up with the asterisk, as in ...

    ... WHERE t.foo =* q.bar
