    Unanswered: "dbo." prefix

    What's the difference between:

    Use a
    select * from dbo.XYZ

    vs.

    use a
    select * from XYZ

    Are these the same? What does "dbo." mean?

    dbo == database owner

    An object in a sybase database is owned by a user, which means that there can be multiple objects with the same name that belong to different users.

    If a user named "the_user" executes

    select * from the_table

    sybase will return data from the_user.the_table if this table exists, and from dbo.the_table otherwise.

    Specifying "dbo." ensures that data from the "public" tables is returned.
