Unanswered: column Indexing in Sybase IQ

    Hi Experts,

After googling on Sybase IQ, I found it is using a column indexing rather than row indexing , which makes IQ to be compared with other sybase products. Can anyone explain me the concept of column indexing in sybase IQ.

    Regards,
    Chella

    Hi,

Sybase IQ is a relational database software system used for datawarehousing.
It is a product from sybase corporation (like Sybase ASE we have Sybase IQ (Interactive Query)).

In traditional database system (like Sybase ASE), it uses row based indexing. But in Sybase IQ it uses column based indexing which makes Sybase IQ comparitively good in its performance.

Now I need to know what exactly a column based indexing is.

    Regards,
    Shiya

Every column is stored with a default index, i.e. the data itself is stored in an index. The closest you can find in row based is clustered, but not anywhere close to it

    Suggest reading this. http://infocenter.sybase.com/help/in...q_12.6/toc.xml

And also the manuals if you are going to be working on IQ. An IQ class would help if you have the budget.
