    Unanswered: Master database dump

    Hi All,

    I am taking the master databse dump in some lower version now i want load this master dump to higher version will it work.

    If it work's,will vice versa also work

    EX:11.0 to 12.5

    12.5 to 11.0

    You generally do not want to load a master-dump from a lower version in a higher version. There shuld not be any reason why you need to laod a lower-version masterdb in a higher version. All it contains are systemobjects. Things like logins, users, roles and thinbgs like that can be transferred in other, safer ways.

    Loading userdatabases from a lower versino into a higgher version will work, vice versa won't work.
    To go from 11.0 to 12.5, use a 12.0 server as intermediate, only 11.5 and 11.9 can be loaded into 12.5 in one step.

    Hi,

    before going to upgrade please take ddl for all user and system databases.
    take bcp out of syslogins,sysdevices,sysdatabases,sysusages,syslog inroles.

    That is not guaranteed to work. You cannot bcp in systemtables from 2 very different versions Even between 12.0 and 12.5, several systemtables have been changed.
    It is a good way to backup important systemdata though.
