Unanswered: format number w/o using to_char

I have a column in a view that I would like to be able to format its numbers as $999,999.00, but all I can see in the the docs is either a session change or to_char() which converts the data to character. I need for it to remain a number and not be converted to character if possible.

Is there another function I should look at or do I need to write my own function for this?

    Thanks.

$999,999.00 is NOT a number, it is a character string and if you want to display a character string in a report, format the string into characters using a report writer or a sql query and store the value as a number in the table. Oracle has no "currency" data type like Microsoft does.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.
