Enter and Execute query. It is default, built-in Forms behaviour.

create a non database control and have an after_update trigger on it.

    "after_update"? Which database/tool is that?

Bill is right - it would be the WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM trigger. But, that's plain stupid; why, WHY would you write bunch of SELECTs to display information (imagine a tabular form and many details for each student - you'd need a cursor loop) when Forms already offers a solution, it is built-in functionality, and it is Enter + Execute Query.
