Unanswered: Just a stupid question about Primary Keys

Can you have a Primary key with a datatype of Varchar? Or do unique keys and Primary keys always have to be numbers? Or are they allowed but poor database design practice?

Nothing wrong with having a varchar key - it is a popular misconception that primary keys must be integers.

You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
The average person thinks he's above average!
For most folks, they don't know, what they don't know.
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.
