    Unanswered: Upgrading MySQL

I have installed MySQL many times on various computers but I've never done an upgrade. I'm currently running MySQL version 5.0.18 on a remote Linux server but need to upgrade as I want to use the larger varchar sizes available in 5.0.3.

I couldn't find any docs on what commands to run how to do this - is there a web page for simpletons that explains it or can someone give me some commands?

Should I upgrade all the way to version 6?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I got impatient and tried the following

    Code:
    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade mysql
Which seemed to upgrade everything on the server (not just mysql) but things all seem to be working fine.

The good news is the mysql version went from 5.0.18 to 5.0.27 but it didn't go any further. I tried doing the above process again but nothing changed. What else do I need to do?

It turns out I just didn't understand the numbering system. Version 5.0.27 is actually later than 5.0.3 - it's a shame they don't use leading zeros to help poor sods like me.

PS I seem to be playing connect 4 on my own thread but I guess that's cheating.
