    Unanswered: question about backups

    Hello,
we just got a hosting provider.

However, we are told backup against disasters are done at 2am at night

What happens to our data if it crashes during the day, as some transactions will be lost ?

    Thanks

Ask them if they make transaction log backups. If they do not, then yes, transactions will be lost.

you can take your own backups (log/differential) by connecting to that database server, provided you have sufficient rights to write backup files to a folder of that server.

If you have another group doing backups, this might not be the best solution, especially when it comes to transaction logs. Since Sallymac is using a hosting provider, they may delete her backups not knowing what they are, when they run low on diskspace. And if a transaction log backup is among those lost, then there is no way to get that database back to any point in time covered by that transaction log. To make things worse, depending on how the hosting provider backs things up, you could be punching holes in their transaction log backup sequences.
